ÛÛ² Because of – or perhaps in spite of – the fact that ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² my musical tastes fall well outside of the ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² mainstream, I have always been suspicious of ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² something that has become the ‘latest critical ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² darling’, even when it is from an artist I love. In ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² recent years I remember buying ‘River: The Joni ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² Letters’ on release because of the artist making ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² the recording (Herbie Hancock), his guests (Wayne ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² Shorter, Michael Brecker, Roy Hargrove and ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² vocalists Norah Jones, Tina Turner), and of course ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² the subject of the tribute (Joni Mitchell). I ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² played it a few times, since nothing really ’stuck’ ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² the first time, but quickly deleted the content off ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² my iPod as I found it indulgent and inferior to the ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² originals in every way. But soon enough the tribute ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² album was a top seller and was nominated for and ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² eventually won big-time at the Grammy Awards. None ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² of the reasons that the record was celebrated had ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² much to do with actually being a great collection ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² of music. So when the newest recording by the ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² talented but relatively unknown pianist Vijay Iyer ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² was being called ‘jazz record of the year’ – even ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² before release – I was quite skeptical to say the ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² least. ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² Vijay Iyer isn’t exactly new on the scene, as the ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² 38 year old [CENSORED] of Indian parents has been ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² recording for nearly 15 years. He has had success ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² with Steve Coleman’s Five Elements and other ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² ensembles as well as with his own recordings, which ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² have featured a variety of configurations and also ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² different degrees of technology infused with his ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² interesting blend of jazz and southeast Asian ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² influences. For Historicity he has a basic piano ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² trio with Stephen Crump on bass and Marcus Gilmore ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² on drums, but that doesn’t make this music ordinary ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² or derivative by any stretch of the imagination. ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² 2009 has been an interesting year for piano trios, ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² even more for me as I have been rediscovering some ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² classic piano trio works that had long sat locked ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² on LP’s in my closet. While there have certainly ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² been mainstream releases like Keith Jarret’s latest ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² group of expertly executed standards, I have been ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² more in tune with the newer directions in trio ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² interplay exemplified by Avery Sharpe’s new release ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² “Autumn Moonlight”. This has also been fed by the ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² re-release of some classic works by folks like ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² Richie Beirach and Paul Bley from the ECM library. ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² I recall reading a comment recently by Avery Sharpe ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² about how after years playing with McCoy Tyner’s ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² trio that the space afforded by that group and the ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² level of interplay and importance of each member ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² made it so he HAD to form his own trio because he ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² couldn’t hear music in any other way. ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² Likewise Iyer constructs a trio where every not and ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² rhythmic statement by each member lends ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² considerable weight to every moment of music ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² presented. But the structure and presentation are ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² very different: whereas Sharpe’s group will easily ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² slide into the background to allow for ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² conversations and has been pleasantly enjoyed by my ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² family on a Sunday morning, Historicity simply will ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² not be ignored. My family enjoys it, but it just ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² isn’t the sort of music that allows for easy ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² background listening during casual conversation. ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² The music here is dense and layered and punctuated ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² both rhythmically and harmonically with surprises ²ÛÛ
ÛÛ² at every turn. ²ÛÛ
